Popis: On Tuesday, following the Mediterranean cyclone, we paddled through high water on the upper reaches of the Hron River. That evening, we stayed at a very comfortable and inexpensive guesthouse near Brezno, where breakfast was included in the price for about 20 Euros. We parked next to the Brezno train station/bus station and carried the two Rush 1 boats on our backs. Our bus left at 9:13 a.m.; it was almost empty at first, but it filled up within a few stops. It took an hour to reach Pohorelá. This is already very close to the headwaters of the river; from here, Červená Skala—the theoretical highest point from which it’s possible to paddle (when the water level is above 65 cm at Polomka)—is perhaps 12 km away. We only had 56 cm of water now, but that proved to be more than enough. For the top 20 kilometers of our trip, there wasn’t a single second to rest; we had to constantly watch the water, overhanging branches, and small rapids. This isn’t water for beginners. We were lucky with the fallen trees; we only had to go around one on the bank. As for a pine tree—which was sticking out 10 centimeters and floating—I got out, moved the boat, tied it to a branch, then pulled Judit through the branches so she stayed in the boat, and then got back in. There are three dams on this section, all to be avoided on the right bank. The first is a dam with a rocky rapids below it; here, you have to drag the boat about 20 meters through the grass among the trees. The portage is steep, but not too bad. The next one is a small power plant; here you have to get out in time over the fence and pull the boat on the grass along an asphalt street, then get back in before the bridge in the brush. Then there’s another dam with a big rocky rapid; you have to get out well before it, at the sign, drag the boat a long way across the grass, and get back on 20 meters below the dam. There were a few “teasers” too—I don’t think they’re too bad; you can check them out in the video. We made it through without a scratch. We both capsized—I got stuck against a protruding tree after an S-shaped rapids, and Judit ended up under a fallen tree that was lying completely across the river, but there was a spot on the left edge where you could crawl under it by lying flat on the boat. She didn’t make it there; she drifted into it and capsized. Then I rescued her and her boat, tied it to the tree from below, wading into water up to my thighs, and pulled her boat out of its tight spot. Fortunately, we were dressed so that this wasn’t a problem in the 10°C water. Nature provided an extra special experience: a golden eagle was eating its lunch—a gray heron—just an arm’s length away from me. This is also featured in the video. The weather was very kind to us; the snow-capped Low Tatras loomed nearby, but down below it was warm—15–18°C—and sunny, with just a light shower. The trees were just coming into leaf, and there were plenty of kingfishers flitting around us. There was almost no one by the river—just one angler, two guys on a bridge, and then people strolling around Brezno. This section is incredibly beautiful, wild and romantic, untouched, yet very challenging; as a beginner, practice a lot on the section below Nemecká, then come here. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of trash here too, as you can see in the video.

Popis: They promised severe cold weather due to the Rex block spreading over Central Europe, but Zeliezovce welcomed me with very pleasant sunny weather. I took the train from Sturovo and walked from the station. I inflated the boat at the usual place, on the left bank above the bridge. The river was very beautiful, with lots of kingfishers, cormorants, little egrets, and ducks around me. I got a little rain at Kamenín, and even a few hailstones, but it didn't bother me much because I was rowing fast and wasn't cold. Then I paddled a little further on the Danube and got off near the Adri buffet, close to the bus stop. From there, I took the bus back to Esztergom.

Popis: The heavy rain was also good for the paddleable rivers, and the Hron rose in its upper reaches. The Dubova gauge showed 92 centimeters at the start. I paddled from the Chvatimech railway station to Banská Bystrica, using train logistics on the way up. The railway bridge was perfect for boarding, as it not only spans the Čierny Hron, but also the abandoned narrow-gauge railway that ran along the banks of the Čierny Hron a few years ago. So I was lucky enough to paddle on the Čierny Hron for a few meters. A little further down, the Bystrianska flows in, which in theory is also navigable when the water level is high. Now it only had about 2 m3 of water, which is not enough for paddling. Then comes my favorite, the Podbrezova steel mill. It's quite surreal to paddle in an industrial environment. There was plenty of water up to Lopej, where they tap the Hron and release the water back into the power plant at Dubová, until then it flows in a hidden pipe along Route 66. I'm not saying it wouldn't have been nice to have a little more water on this section, but I managed. I sped along again from Nemecka, reaching an average speed of 10.5 on a longer section. I was lucky with the weather, it was warm enough for short sleeves and swimming trunks, only before Banská Bystrica did I get caught in a short 2-minute rain shower. I finished very quickly, in fact I could have easily started in Brezno as well. Maybe next time.
